Energy and Our Planet

The bid committee has identified a starting point for theme development. Further development and refinement of the recommended theme will occur as the bid progresses to the international bid and leading up to EXPO 2017. The theme we are developing addresses energy and our world. It is founded in the ideas of energy and sustainability, but can encompass many interpretations of energy. The sub-themes that are developed in the next phase of the project will further define the recommended theme.

This EXPO will explore:

  • innovations in energy;
  • the sustainability of our planet; and
  • benefits to humanity through research, knowledge, culture and education.

The world will speak to new ways to use, produce and save energy at this EXPO.

The recommended theme − Energy and Our Planet − examines our need for environmental sustainability while addressing the challenges of energy supply and demand. It is dynamic and forward-looking, and connects with people on many levels. It is essential to cultural and spiritual practices worldwide, from the Far East to our own Aboriginal peoples. It invokes the notion of responsibility and stewardship, and is a concept alive to Edmontonians, for whom a spirit of cooperation and volunteerism is second nature.

Energy holds a personal connection and meaning for all who visit or contribute to EXPO 2017. Moreover, the potential of the energy concept holds promise for all developed nations which will showcase their innovations in research and technology. The insights gained will also have tremendous value for rapidly developing countries and for whom the availability of energy is essential for growth and development.

The recommended theme will provide opportunities for knowledge-sharing with developing nations supporting technological solutions that "leap-frog" the challenges associated with traditional energy production, distribution and use.

Energy and Our Planet is a theme with breadth and scope sufficient to accommodate future developments that might lie ahead, ensuring a sustainable, high-quality legacy at the conclusion of EXPO 2017. The recommended theme will position Canada as a leader and innovator in new approaches to energy and sustainability, far beyond the traditional energy sources of oil, gas, coal and hydro.

The harmony of energy with our planet is also of personal consequence. The energy of the spirit and mind that exists in each and every one of us will be inspired in support of actions leading to a cleaner, stronger planet. This personal energy, and the difference one person can make, will be central to the success of EXPO 2017.
